Title IO
Choreography by Tsai Hsi Hung
Original Composition: Joe Fee
Premiere 2018

Taiwanese choreographer Tsai Hsi Hung based the movement of her 2018 METdance Emerging Choreographer Commission piece on specific hexagrams from the I Ching, emphasizing the cycles of life and death. The work portrays yin and yang on a cosmic level- the movement of time against the stillness of eternity. The elements formed slowly through large formations and coalesced until dissolving.

Title DOUBLEND

It’s dark, before sunrise
I hold the vessel facing the rising sun
Just before dawn the wind rises across the sea
When the light is strong enough, at a certain moment, Thea puts a god’s mask on her face I take hold of Thea's forearm and slowly lift her upwards
At the same time I raise the vessel above my head
The lighting is on the mask reflected in the blood
I drink from the vessel, swallowing the reflection

In Taiwan, the dragon is the vital force of life.Yet it is ethereal. Each movement flickers quickly and is gone, transformed into the next. The arms are raised. The body turns, rushing downward and channeling the new phrase. The dancers are currents winding around each other.

The tiger appears. It symbolizes the bravery needed to embrace the energy of the dragon. It is the individual struggling to assert himself. The choreography engages with this dichotomy and explores the harmony and dissonance epitomized by the dragon and tiger.
